About lip fillers and lip implants – PermaLip ™

In these toggles, we’ve provided some general information about the procedure. For specific information about how we can help you, contact us for a consultation.

Lip Fillers:

Volume loss in the face is one of the primary causes of an aged look. Fillers provide a quick solution with immediate effect.

Here at British Face Clinic, we only use fillers made from silicone (similar to breast implant material).

The fillers come in three thicknesses: 3mm, 4mm and 5mm, and three different lengths: 55mm, 60mm and 65mm. The variety of sizes guarantees that you will find the exact one to meet your requirements.

It is important to remember that common fillers are only effective for mild volume loss. For more extreme cases, you may be better served by implants.

Also, fillers are reabsorbed and require repeated injections for maintenance. Fillers placed in an area of frequent motion (e.g. lips) will not last as long as fillers placed in less mobile areas.

Lip fillers:

There are many different fillers on the market today. However, the most popular, Juvaderm and Restylane, are made from hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring chemical within our cells. It does not cause allergy and is a non-animal product.

The cost of HA fillers is dependent on the number of syringes you require and the area that we are injecting and your specific requirements.

Filler injections can hurt. Therefore, for most areas, I use a local anaesthetic to eliminate the discomfort. Once the injections are complete, you must avoid excessive movement of the injected area and apply ice packs.

If for any reason you do not like the fuller look after the treatment, I can reverse it by injecting another natural chemical. I do not use permanent fillers such as silicone – implants are a better choice for this purpose.

I can treat any wrinkle or fold on the face with fillers. However, the common areas include:

Lip enhancement

Fillers can enhance the shape and increase the volume of your lips, resulting in a more defined and plumper appearance. You are likely to require one syringe for the shape and one for volume replacement.

Fillers can also be used to mitigate the vertical wrinkles, also known as lipstick lines. I usually combine this with botox for minor wrinkles or deep dermabrasion for deeper ones.

Lip Implants

PermaLip™ lip enhancement is relatively simple to perform. I use cream and injections to numb your mouth and lips. I then make two tiny incisions in the corners of your mouth and pass the PermaLip™ implant through. I then repeat the process for the other lip. The incisions are closed using absorbable sutures.

The procedure typically takes less than thirty minutes, and you may resume normal activity the following day.

Nasolabial fold

The line running from the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth can deepen with time. I can effectively soften this line with filler injections.

Typically you will require between 2-4 syringes for adequate effect.

Injection rhinoplasty

Fillers can be an excellent substitute to smoothen out minor nasal defects, i.e. depressions, asymmetries or to make the nasal hump less prominent.

Lip Implants

Lip Implants are an excellent alternative to fillers for volumising the upper, lower or both lips. Permanent lip implants have the benefit of being a one-time procedure that is intended to last for your life. Unlike fillers, these do not “vanish” away with time or lose their shape and form.

What should I expect post-operatively?

After the treatment, you should expect to be swollen and slightly tender. There may be some bruising around the lips which will subside after the first week. It is normal to experience some discomfort in the early few days after the treatment; however, you can alleviate this with over the counter medications such as Ibuprofen or Codeine.

Is it quite painful?

Most discomfort, if present, usually resolves after 24-48 hours, although your lips will be sensitive to light or medium pressure for about two weeks.

Is there much bruising?

There is not very much bruising with typical cases, although this may vary from person to person. If you are more prone to bruising than others, you should take Arnica montana or Bromelain orally to decrease bruising. You may be instructed to use a topical arnica ointment as well. These three products are thought to reduce both bruising and swelling for many surgical procedures, including lip procedures.

When will I be able to see the results?

Your lips will be quite large and swollen in the first few days postoperatively. As the swelling subsides, you will begin to see your final result.

I have heard that the risk of infection is quite high in lip implants, is this true?

Infection is a risk with any surgical procedure. However, the observed infection rate with PermaLip™ is extremely low, with an expected rate of infection to be below 1%. You will be prescribed both antibiotics and anti-cold sore medicine to minimise the chance of infection.

How are lip implants comparable to injectables?

Implants do not wear off like temporary injectables. Temporary injectables are associated with repeat treatments every few months as the body breaks down the filler. Therefore, repetitive, painful, and costly injection procedures are required indefinitely if lip fullness is to be maintained. PermaLip™ has the advantage of being both permanent, yet easily reversible, giving the best of both worlds.

Will my significant other be able to feel PermaLip ™ when we kiss?

The vast majority of patients report that their partners cannot feel the implants while kissing. The extent to which you can feel the implant, depends on the size of your lips before treatment and the size of the implant. If you have thin lips and then have a large implant placed into a tight space, it is quite possible to be able to feel the change. During the consultation, I will recommend the best size implant for you given your existing lip characteristics and your desired goals.

Can the PermaLip™ implant leak or rupture?

No. PermaLip™ is unique in that it is manufactured from a very soft, but solid, silicone.

Hear what our patients have to say

Our reputation rests on the experience of our patients

“Mr. Supriya operated on my daughter Mia earlier this year carrying out a septoplasty and surgery to both turbinates. I am a nurse myself and have worked for many years in the operating theatre and cosmetic industry so I am used to dealing with surgeons. Mr Supriya is an amazing person, not only a very competent surgeon but a very kind caring man who put himself out completely to help and accommodate Mia for her surgery. For the first time in 12 years Mia can breath properly so to say we are grateful is an understatement.”

S.A., Septoplasty

“I was there for my medical examination. From setting up appointments, registration, consultation and check up process, all staff and Mrinal himself were exceptional. I would highly recommend the clinic and I am very happy with the results of my treatment.”

M. R., Deep Plane Facelift

“I have received only what I can describe as world class treatment from Mr Supriya. His care & professionalism has been a comfort for me from day one.”

A. C., Rhinoplasty

“Dr Supriya was very friendly, professional, and put me at ease straight away. He spent time talking to me about specifically what I wanted and gave me his honest advice. Consultations were always very positive, and I didn’t feel nervous for my surgery.”

K. T., Facelift

“The result from my surgery was fantastic – it was exactly what I wanted. I had an open septorhinoplasty, and as soon as I came out of surgery I could breath much better than before. To my surprise, I didn’t experience any noticeable facial bruising or swelling at any point in my recovery.”

G. E., Septorhinoplasty

“The results were so natural-looking that no one at work could tell I had anything done! I am delighted with my experience overall, and would certainly recommend Dr Supriya to anyone interested in cosmetic surgery, particularly rhinoplasty.”

G. v.H., Rhinoplasty

“My experience has been amazing from the first consultation till the surgery and even after the surgery. The support and care given by Steve (Patient Coordinator) and my surgeon Dr Mrinal Supriya has been amazing and comforting. I am very pleased with the results so far and I couldn’t be happier.”
