This video discusses how patients perceive themselves and feel perceived by others after a facelift procedure. It shares an illustrative patient example and reflects on both the emotional and social impacts of surgical facial rejuvenation.
Transcript:
After people have a facelift, how do they feel that they’re perceived by other people afterwards? Do you think there’s a change in how others see them?
The face is a key communication tool. We use it all the time to communicate with our immediate social surroundings. One impact is if you lose confidence in your face, you start avoiding situations, whether social or professional.
For example, I did a facelift on a woman who came to my clinic with her husband. She used to be very active socially, but she had started avoiding those social situations. Her husband was concerned that his wife was not even going to meet her family members or was hesitant to go out with her daughter to meet her daughter’s friends because she always had this self-conscious awareness about sagging jowls, turkey neck, and the lack of distinction in her facial features.
She had the surgery, and by the middle of the following month, at her last follow-up, her husband was delighted because now her wife was more keen to go out than he was, including socially with her peer group and also with her daughter. She was keen to go on an overseas holiday with her family and social friends. It completely transformed her life and, in turn, her partner’s life because from being a recluse, they were active participants in social situations and events. That had a very positive impact on her life.
This is a story I find repeats in many of my patients because, as I explained in one of my earlier videos, I would not operate on someone who is not in the right frame of mind. There has to be a very good understanding between me and my patient about what we are trying to achieve and why we are trying to achieve it, and therefore almost all of my patients end up in a much better place than where they were, both physically and mentally, after the surgery.
We’ve got something fun for you. We have a quiz below that will help you understand whether a deep plane facelift or other techniques surrounding the face might be right for you. So take a moment, have some fun, and take the quiz below.
