In this video, Dr Mrinal Supriya discusses the everyday frustrations many patients experience when their facial appearance no longer reflects how they feel internally. He explains how concerns about the face can affect confidence, social interactions, professional life, and even enjoyment of holidays and photographs.
Transcript:
For patients over midlife who are feeling frustrated with how their face looks and feel it no longer reflects the lifestyle they want to lead, what kinds of daily frustrations do they experience?
There is a wide range. At one extreme, some people come and say they completely dislike their neck or the way their face looks. At the other extreme, some people point to a small area, such as the jowl, and say that if it could just be lifted slightly, that is all they need. There is a broad spectrum of concerns.
The common theme is that people are not comfortable with the appearance of their face. As a result, they start avoiding social situations and do not feel confident in professional environments. They often avoid having their photographs taken, whether socially or professionally. This leads to a lack of self-confidence and avoidance of situations where their face may be the centre of attention.
This can have an adverse impact on both personal and professional life. People who were previously active participants in social and work settings may begin to withdraw and, at the other extreme, almost become reclusive.
Patients often ask whether these feelings are driven by comments from others or by internal recognition. In most cases, it is an internal drive rather than external comments. Patients tend to get the most benefit when they choose treatment for themselves, rather than to gain approval or praise from others. It should be about improving self-worth and self-confidence, with a clear understanding of the physical changes they are not happy about.
As a result, people may start missing social activities, feel uncomfortable in everyday situations, or avoid certain work scenarios. Many, particularly women, begin avoiding social gatherings, holidays, and situations where photographs are taken. In an era where taking photos is effortless, avoiding these moments can mean missing out on small but meaningful experiences. These concerns can often be addressed appropriately with the correct procedure.
