In this video, Dr Mrinal Supriya discusses how patients often believe they are perceived by others before undergoing a facelift. He explains how casual comments, workplace interactions, and social environments can influence self-image and prompt people to seek consultation when their appearance no longer feels aligned with how they feel internally.
Transcript:
Whether it is right or wrong, how do patients imagine that others see them before they have a cosmetic treatment such as a facelift?
That is a very practical problem for many patients. It is not just that they feel less energetic themselves, but they become conscious of comments from other people. Even casual remarks in the workplace, such as being told they look tired, can be related in their mind to ageing of the face or changes under the eyes.
Common comments patients feel they receive from others are that they look tired, they do not look energetic, they have started looking older, or they do not look as healthy as they used to. Many patients take these occasional remarks and internalise them, which reinforces the feeling that their body image is no longer in sync with how they feel mentally. That is often what propels them to seek a consultation and look for ways to address these concerns.
Whether these perceptions are true or not, these are the feelings that tend to build in the mind. In many cases, there is a physical change, and that is inevitable. However, the way we live now has changed significantly. People do not retire early, they remain active in their professional lives, and they continue to be socially engaged with family and friends.
Social gatherings are more frequent, and the easy availability of digital photographs through smartphones and cameras creates an environment where many patients feel it is important to look the way they feel. When the ageing face does not reflect that, it often motivates them to seek advice on addressing facial ageing.
