Laura Livesey: I’m here today with Mr Mrinal Supriya, who is an ENT consultant who specializes in facial cosmetic surgery. Today we’re going to be talking about rhinoplasty.

So, welcome. Mr Supriya, can you tell us what the most common age that people come to you for rhinoplasty is? I’ve seen a lot of talk of young women that are maybe not happy with the nose that they have. What is the most common age people come to you?

Mrinal Supriya: Yep, so I get a lot of question regarding the age after which you can have a rhinoplasty. As a general rule, once the development of the facial skeleton and the bone is complete, you can have a rhinoplasty. That usually translates to the age of 15 to 16 in girls and a year or two after that for boys. Anyone above that age can have a rhinoplasty done.

The other thing to consider is, if you are involved in contact sports – be it rugby, boxing or football – where there is a significant risk injury to your nose, it is best to delay the surgery after that phase of your life is over, for obvious reasons. If you have surgery and then you fracture your nose again, you will be back to square one. As long as you fulfil these two things, you can have rhinoplasty at any age, from an early age to even later in your life.
